What Is a Hair Transplant?
Hair transplant is a specialized hair replacement surgical procedure that restores hair to balding or thinning areas by transplanting bundle of follicles units from the side or back of the scalp.
Hair transplant surgery is usually performed in the doctor’s office using one of two methods such as- follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).
Before starting the procedure, the scalp is cleaned and an anesthesia is given to numb the back side of the head.
In FUSS method, 6 to 10- inch strip of skin is taken from the back of your head. This small strip of skin is set aside and the scalp is sewed to close the wound. Finally, this area is covered by the hair around it.
The removed strip of scalp is divided into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, each one having an individual or just a few hairs. The type and number of graft depend on hair quality, type, color, and the size of the region where the transplant is to be performed.
In FUE method, the back of scalp is shaved and hair follicles are removed one by one from there. The cleaned area is healed with small dots, which will cover the existing hair.
Once a new skin graft is prepared, the scalp is cleaned and area for the hair transplant is made numb with anesthesia. Holes or slits are created with a needle or scalpel, and each graft is delicately placed in one of the holes. The whole hair transplant process will take about 4 to 8 hours, depending on the size and type of the hair transplant. Later on, a person might need another procedure if he wants thicker hair or falling of hair do not stop.
Most of the cases of hair transplant surgeries may involve between 1,000 to 3,000 grafts.
Recovery, results, and potential complications
Recovery period depends on the extent of the surgery. Some patients may report mild pain, sore, and numbness. It is very common for hairs to fall out from the transplanted follicles within the first month and then regrow again. Usually, it may take three months to see new growth after surgery, but sometimes it may require six to nine months to see actual results.
Complications of hair transplant are relatively uncommon. Side effects may include uneven hair growth or scarring. The scalp may become very tender after surgery, therefore, antibiotic and pain medications can be prescribed for several days.
You should consult a specialist doctor at Shah Hospital to decide which option will be suitable for you, as well as know more about the improvement and associated risks during and after the surgery.
